SILVERFISH!

Add comments

Silverfish are primitive, wingless, flattened insects that tend to live in cool, damp areas.  Adults can range in size from about ½ to ¾ inch in length.  Their flattened bodies allow them to hide in narrow cracks and crevices during the day.  At night they emerge to feed on a variety of foods, such as paper and fabric, as well as most any foods containing protein and/or carbohydrates.  Starchy materials and glues (such as book binding materials) can be damaged by these insects – in fact, homeowners sometimes do not notice silverfish at all until they discover damaged items.  Areas that can provide the right habitat for silverfish infestations include basements, bathrooms, and areas where seldom-used items are stored.

What about silverfish control?  The first step to effective control is to consider the biology and needs of the insect.  With silverfish, similar to so many other pest insects, infestations are often linked to moisture issues and high humidity.  Another contributing factor can be clutter – especially paper items such as newspapers, boxes, and books that can also serve as silverfish food.  These conditions must be addressed and corrected for lasting control.

If silverfish are a problem in a limited area, a dehumidifier or fan may be used to dry the area out.  Leaky plumbing and other sources of moisture should be fixed.  Items that are to be stored for long periods of time should be tightly sealed in air-tight plastic bags or containers.  For severe infestations, chemical control may be warranted.  Your Black Pest Prevention Technician has the right stuff and the knowledge to rid your home of these pesky insects, so please call if we can be of service!

As always, thanks for reading…next time, no-see-ums!
