American Cockroach

Despite the name, the American Cockroach is not native to the Americas. It was introduced to the United States from Africa as early as 1625. They are also colloquially known as a Palmetto Bug or a Water Bug. The American as well as the Smokybrown and Oriental cockroaches are normally found outdoors, but they can live inside.

It is considered one of the fastest running insects, often darting out of sight when someone enters a room, and can fit into small cracks and under doors despite its fairly large size. They are moderate flyers. Due to their large size and slow development, large infestations of these insects are not common within houses. However, during certain times of the year, particularly in cold weather, these cockroaches may move indoors seeking warmer temperatures and food.

The American Roach, Palmetto Bug or Water Bug, whatever you wish to call it, are common in basements, crawl spaces, cracks and crevices of porches, foundations, mulch beds and walkways adjacent to buildings. Charleston has a very large population of American roaches.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach is the cockroach of concern, the species that gives all other cockroaches a bad name and is probably the most widely troublesome domestic pest. The adults have wings, though they rarely fly, preferring to run.

German cockroaches are good hitchhikers and often find their way into your home via grocery bags, cardboard boxes, drink cartons and secondhand appliances and prefer to live in warm, humid places close to food and moisture sources.

German roaches thrive on food such as trash, dirty dishes, and leftover grease, as well as residues from toothbrushes and dish sponges. Good basic sanitation can not only prevent a roach infestation but also significantly improve the effectiveness of treatment.
